The Nantucket Board of Health passed a ban on smoking at all town-owned recreation areas, a move that will bring an end to smoking at the beach and in parks at the end of the month. The vote was unanimous, according to a report in the Inquirer and Mirror. The city has not posted the text of the new ordinance on its website yet, though the report indicates that violators can be fined for smoking in areas where it is prohibited, which includes adjacent parking areas. The ban goes into effect May 31. Nantucket is home to just over 10,000 people but is well known for being a popular vacation destination, with the population swelling to 50,000 residents during the summer months.
