The city of Salem, Ore. is once again considering a smoking ban, this time one that would effect all city-owned property including parks. At its Monday meeting, the City Council moved forward with a proposal for a new smoking ban, setting a hearing for the city’s May 26 meeting. If approved, the current version of the smoking ban proposal would fine violators $50 for the first offense, $150 for the second and $250 for the third. According to The Statesman Journal, only one councilor voted against the advancing of the proposal. Last year Salem considered allowing businesses to ban smoking on sidewalks, it appears that measure did not advance. Salem is the capital of Oregon, located in both Marion and Polk Counties. It has a metro area population of over 400,000.
