City leaders in Orinda, Calif. have given the green light to have new anti-smoking rules drafted up that will ban lighting up on outdoor dining areas and public events, as well as creating smoke-free housing in existing apartments and condominiums. The city has already banned smoking in city parks, nature areas and trails, according to a report from the Contra Costa Times. Mayor Steve Glazer has said that he hopes to see the ban extended to city sidewalks as well. It is expected that the first draft of the ordinance will be ready in “a couple of months” according to city manager Janet Keeter. Orinda is located in the East Bay area, 17 miles northeast of San Francisco. It has an estimated population of 18,681 residents.
