Waynesville, N.C. Working on Smoking Ban

The Smoky Mountain town of Waynesville, N.C. continues to work on a smoking ban after looking at a first draft at its meeting on March 24. In a notice posted on the city’s website, the Board of Aldermen anticipate that a revised version will be presented at the next board meeting on April 14, with a public hearing tentatively set for May 12. The first draft of the proposal suggested a ban on smoking within 50 feet of the main entrance to a building, and while that seemed manageable for the town’s commercial area, it presented problems for businesses in more rural parts of the town. That is one of the reasons the board never planned on adopting the proposal at its first reading, with Waynesville Town Manager Marcy Onieal telling SmokyMountainNews.com that the board expects a number of tweaks to be needed before it can be adopted. Waynesville is the largest city in Haywood County with a population of just under 10,000 people. It is located about 145 miles west of Charlotte.
