L’Atelier Côte d’Or Shipping Next Month

Add one more thing to Federal Cigar’s 94th anniversary celebration this week—the newest from L’Atelier Imports. The L’Atelier Côte d’Or will soft launch at the New Hampshire retailer this Friday before it ships nationwide in April. Côte d’Or was previewed at last year’s IPCPR Convention & Trade Show with rough details described as a soft-pressed churchill, limited and based around pelo de oro tobacco. Nearly eight months later, all those details remain true. According to L’Atelier Imports, the García family—of My Father fame—offered the company a small batch of pelo de oro tobacco, a strain that is surrounded in a myriad of folklore. The tobacco was banned in Cuba due to its propensity to mold, but is still grown by a select amount of people around the world—including the García. It’s noted for its golden color—pelo de oro translates into golden hair—and the challenges of growing it. Côte d’Or is a region located in eastern France that grows pinot noir grapes and is known for also being temperamental, which seemed like a fitting name for the company. The wrapper is actually the same the company uses on its Selection Spéciale releases: Sancti Spiritus, a hybrid of the aforementioned pelo de oro and criollo seeds. ...
