A proposal to ban smoking in parks unanimously passed the Cottonwood, Ariz. City Council on Tuesday evening. The move comes after the Yavapai Anti-Tobacco Coalition of Youth petitioned the council in December to either ban smoking outright, or at minimum create designated smoking areas with trash receptacles in areas away from popular gathering spots. The hope was to both reduce the public’s exposure to second hand smoke and reduce litter in the city’s five parks, according to VerdeNews.com. There will be fines for violators but they have not yet been posted to the city’s website, with the report suggesting a minimum of $50. Cottonwood is located about 100 miles north of Phoenix and is home to just over 11,000 residents.
