Smokers in Conway, S.C. are breathing a sigh of relief this week as the city council officially said no to a proposed smoking ban that would have snuffed out the ability to light up in the majority of businesses in the city. Earlier this month, the council changed its course by delaying a vote, a bit of a surprising twist to the months-long debate after it had passed its first reading in January. It appears that the city will go ahead with a smaller ban that prohibits smoking in city parks, buildings and vehicles, as that passed its first reading at this week’s meeting. Mayor Alys Lawson expressed disappointment in the vote, saying that a vocal minority swayed the decision, but was proud that many businesses are going smoke-free on their own, according to multiple news reports. Conway is located about 100 miles northeast of Charleston and 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. It has a population of approximately 19,300.
