The Conway City Council started off the year by passing the first reading of a proposal that would effectively ban smoking in all private businesses. Less than a month later, it appears that bill is dead and the city will enact a parks smoking ban in its place, as well as ban smoking inside city buildings and city-owned vehicles. The ordinance started its downward spiral at its second reading on Jan. 20, when Councilwoman Jean Timbes changed her vote after realizing she didn’t want to tell business owners what to do, and wanted to see a ban in parks and city buildings. At Monday night’s meeting, while the council acknowledged that the world was going smoke-free and they had a desire to see the city go smoke-free, a majority also said Conway wasn’t ready to do so yet. While the ban wasn’t acted on at the meeting, the council made plans to formally vote it down at its Feb. 16 meeting.
