In what he described as a “sweeping budget,” Ohio Governor John K. Kasich is proposing an increase on the tax of cigars and other tobacco products from 17% of the wholesale cost to 60%, a move that he predicts will bring in $86.6 million in the next two years. It’s part of a number of increases on tobacco products that includes a $1 per pack increase on the cigarette tax, from $1.25 to $2.25, and a new tax on vapor products and e-cigarettes. All together, Kasich believes the state will bring in $463 million a year. The full budget proposal can be found here. The budget now heads to the House Finance Committee on Tuesday, and if approved would take effect July 1 and run through June 30, 2017.
