A parks smoking ban is coming to Turlock, Calif. after the city council unanimously approved the proposal on Tuesday. While smoking in parks has technically been against the law since 2003, enforcement had been lax. It was a local Girl Scout troop that brought the fact that people were still smoking in parks to the council that spurred the change. The policy bans the use of tobacco products as well as vaping devices and electronic cigarettes. The ban was also extended to the Turlock Regional Transit Center after Council Member Matthew Jacob made the suggestion. Enforcement now becomes the concern, as the police chief said it’s unlikely to be a high priority for his department, according to the Turlock Journal. The council is hoping that new signs and public education will help with enforcement. Turlock had a 2013 population estimate of 70,365 people. It’s located about 100 miles east of San Francisco.
