One of the most expansive smoking bans in the United States might just get a bit tougher. Last summer, the Manhattan Beach City Council banned smoking in most public places including all public property, sidewalks, streets, parking lots and outdoor dining areas; now it wants more. The City Council is moving to ban smoking in multiunit and senior housing, including smoking outside at these facilities. In addition, due to the ineffectiveness of self-enforcement, the City Council could raise the fine for multiple smoking violations from $500 to $1,000. No date has been set for a formal vote on the matter. Manhattan Beach is located in southwestern Los Angeles County and has approximately 35,000 residents.
