Iowa State Senator Herman Quirmbach (D-Ames) is seeking to remove an exemption to the state’s 2008 smokefree air act that allows patrons of casinos to light up. Senate File 36 was introduced on Jan. 15 and would put an end to smoking in gambling structures, racetracks and excursion gambling boats. Democratic Rep. Lisa Heddens, also of Ames, told KCCI.com that she is planning to bring a similar proposal to the state House of Representatives and has bipartisan support. The report also says that a spokesman for Republican Gov. Terry Branstad indicated the governor would support the removal of the exemption. Quirmbach’s bill has been referred to the Senate State Government committee where it is currently awaiting action.
