The small Napa County town of Yountville will soon be considering a smoking ban for its parks, as a proposal to snuff out all smoking has been added to the town council’s Jan. 20 meeting agenda. According to a staff report, the idea has been in the works since at least March 2014, when the Napa County Tobacco Education & Quit Smoking Program made a presentation to the town’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission that proposed making all parks in the town tobacco free. In July, the city surveyed more than 150 residents, with 83.2% supporting a town policy to make Yountville’s public park smoke free. After reviewing the data at its September 2014 meeting, the council instructed city staff to prepare a draft ordinance for consideration at the November meeting. After the council discussed the matter, they revised the ordinance and presented the new proposal at the council’s Jan. 6 meeting. The report also notes that there was no public comment at any of the meetings where the proposal was discussed, or at the March 2014 presentation.
