Yet another Massachusetts municipality says it will increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, as the Leverett Board of Health has a vote scheduled on the matter for Jan. 21 and board members feel confident it will pass. Earlier this week, board chair Fay Zipkowitz told MassLive.com that “it looks pretty much like it’s going to pass” after hearing support from the community and talking with the town’s lone tobacco retailer. She said she has no received no opposition to the increase. Should the proposal pass, Leverett becomes the latest in a growing patchwork of cities and towns to increase the minimum age. The neighboring town of Montague is also considering an age increase and is currently conducting a public survey on the topic. Leverett had a 2010 population estimate of 1,876 people. It is located approximately 90 miles west of Boston.
