As of Jan. 1, smoking in and around most business and public parks in West Springfield, Mass. will be illegal. The West Springfield Board of Health recently approved the “WEST SPRINGFIELD PROHIBITING SMOKING IN WORKPLACES AND PUBLIC PLACES” regulation, which as the name implies, bans smoking at most business and many public places. Under the new law, smoking is prohibited in and within 20-feet of municipal buildings, parks, pools, playgrounds and athletic fields. In addition, smoking will be banned at business with the exception of retail tobacco stores, cigar bars and for some private or religious functions. E-cigarettes will be subjected to all of the new regulations. Those business caught in violation of the law will be fined $100 for the first offense and $200 for a second offense within a two-year period. Subsequent offenses within two years of the second violation will be fined at $300 and could lead to a suspending of a license. West Springfield is located in the southern part of the state in Hamden County, it has a population of around 30,000.
