A smoking ban is on the agenda for the Montgomery City Council tonight, but the proposal’s sponsor doesn’t seem to think it will reach a vote as there seems to be several revisions needed before it has a chance of passing. Councilman C.C. Calhoun told the Montgomery Advertiser that as it stands now, the council isn’t 100% behind the proposal, which seeks to ban smoking completely in all enclosed public places, including bars and private clubs. Mayor Todd Strange called it a “first pass” at reducing second hand smoke in the city and would be shocked if it was passed as currently written. The proposed ordinance currently contains an exemption for cigar and hookah bars. Montgomery is the capitol of Alabama and home to just over 201,000 residents. Update (Dec. 28, 2014) — The measure moves to the Montgomery City Council, which will hold a hearing on Jan. 6, 2015.
