Great Neck Plaza, N.Y. Goes After Indoor Smoking Establishments

The village of Great Neck Plaza on New York’s Long Island is seeking the help of Nassau County to allow them to ban all businesses that primarily make their profit from allowing smoking. The push appears to be spurred by issues with a hookah bar in a neighboring village, according to a report on TheIslandNow.com. Village trustees placed a moratorium on such establishments in June, and earlier this week issued a negative declaration to the Nassau County Planning Commission, a step needed to get the necessary zoning adjustments made. A second reading of the proposal is slated for the trustees’ Jan. 21 meeting. Great Neck Plaza Mayor Jean Calendar told the website that “anything associated with smoking anything that encourages that use in a business is not something I want to be associated with.” Last month, the neighboring Village of Great Neck voted to ban businesses that profit from on-site smoking. Great Neck Plaza is home to just under 7,000 residents and is part of the town of North Hempstead.
