Irving, Texas Smoking Ban Vote Delayed Until January (Update)

The Dallas suburb of Irving will once again try to expand its smoking ban to include all restaurants, parks and game halls. It’s the latest in a fight that has been going on for well over year. Last summer, Mayor Beth Van Duyne led a charge to outlaw smoking in all restaurants, this was met with resistance from citizens who signed petitions. That forced Van Duyne and her supporters to postpone the vote, something that will finally come to head tonight. The current version that the Irving City Council will vote on includes exemptions for private clubs and patios. The new law would directly affect cigar friendly venues like Cool River, a restaurant and bar that has a designated cigar area and humidor. Irving is located in Dallas County between Dallas and Fort Worth. It has population of 225,000. Update (Dec. 12, 2014) — The Irving City Council voted 5-4 to delay the vote until January.
