The Boulder City Council unanimously proved not one, but two bills to outlaw smoking in the city’s parks, paths, bus stops and the Downtown Boulder Business Improvement District. It passed two different versions because the City Council has not determined whether e-cigarettes will be included as part of the ban, the difference between the two versions is that one includes e-cigarettes, the other does not. According to The Denver Post, a second vote is scheduled for Jan. 20. In addition to the aforementioned areas, smoking will be banned within 25-feet of a library, 25-feet of a transit stop, within the City Municipal Campus and within the Boulder High School Area.  Boulder has been working on expanding its smoking ban for the last two months. In September, the Boulder City Manager expanded the existing smoking ban’s area southeast to the corner of 17th and University Ave. Earlier versions of the law included fines ranging from $100-$1,000 and possible jail sentences as high as 90 days for those cited for multiple violations. Neither version of the legislation posted mentioned punishment. Boulder is home to just over 101,000 residents as well as the University of Colorado.
