At its meeting Monday night, the Stillwater City Council unanimously passed a resolution stating that all outdoor areas of the city’s park system are to be tobacco-free, but stopped short of making it an ordinance, something that Councilman Miguel Najera didn’t think would have a chance of passing at this point. The resolution allows the city council to express a directive, but lacks the full power of the law that an ordinance would carry. Najera, who had been working with a group from Oklahoma State University on the matter, told OColly.com that “I’m glad, I’m excited; I think this is the best option…giving (residents) an option instead of punishing them right off the bat.” Stillwater is home to just over 47,000 residents as well as Oklahoma State University, which has an enrollment of just over 25,000 students.
