Voters in Malden, Mo. voted in favor of enacting a new smoking ban on Tuesday night, with a reported 52% of ballots supporting the proposal according to KFVS-TV. Ordinance No. 3095 asked voters “shall the city of Malden Missouri prohibit smoking in enclosed public places, places of employment, private clubs, with five feet of outdoor playgrounds, within five feet of outside entrances, or operable windows, or ventilation systems, of enclosed areas where smoking is prohibited.” There is a provision to allow smoking in places where more than 50 percent of the business is tobacco, while a maximum of 25 percent of hotel guest rooms can be designated as smoking rooms. Outdoor areas of employment and bars owned by charitable religious or veterans’ organizations are also exempt, as are private residences. Malden is located in southeastern Missouri and has a population of 4,239 as of 2013 census estimates.
