Last week, a smoking ban was introduced at an Athens, Ohio City Council meeting, this week the ordinance will be subject to its first vote. The proposed law will be introduced at a Monday meeting. If passed, it will ban the use of tobacco products at city parks, outdoor recreation facilities, pavilions and sports fields. It will cover all sorts of tobacco except e-cigarette use. It’s actually the second law that aims to deal with smoking at public property in Athens. In 2010, Athens County passed a law banning smoking at parks, but it has not been enforced. Athens is located in southern Ohio. It is home to Ohio University and just under 25,000 residents.
