Earlier this month, the Wilmington City Council voted against a smoking ban that would cover parks, playgrounds and bus stops. And yet, despite no new vote by the City Council, a smoking ban will be enacted today. For the second time this year, Mayor Dennis Williams will ignore a vote by the Wilmington City Council, issuing an order that will ban smoking in all city parks, playgrounds, public plazas and transit facilities according to The News Journal. He previously rejected cuts to the city’s fire department. Fines will be set at $100. Smoking will remain legal in tobacco stores, taprooms, taverns, private membership clubs and residences. Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware with a population just over 70,000.
