Last night, the Wilmington City Council voted 6-5 against a new smoking ban that would have smoking in parks, playgrounds and covered bus stops illegal. The vote, which has been on the city’s agenda for the past month after the Wilmington Health, Aging and Disabilities Committee approved a measure to expand the smoking ban and allow police officers to issue $100 fines for violators. Given Thursday’s vote smoking remains legal in retail tobacco stores, taprooms, taverns, private membership clubs and at the city’s park. Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware with a population just over 70,000.
