Add the town of Wayland to the list of places in Massachusetts where it will be illegal to purchase tobacco if you are under the age of 21. On Monday, the Wayland Board of Health unanimously approved a new ordinance that would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21-years of age as of Jan. 1, 2015. In addition, nicotine delivery devices are included in the new ordinance, meaning e-cigarettes will also be affected by the move. In addition, smoking will now be prohibited at workplaces and public places, including “outdoor areas of restaurants, bars, taverns, etc.” There will also be a 25-foot non-smoking area outside of all entrances of municipal buildings. Wayland is located in the eastern part of the state in Middlesex County, just 15 miles west of Boston. It has a population under 15,000. In the last six months, four other Middlesex County cities and towns have raised the minimum purchasing age to 21: Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge and Malden.
