Tuesday was a bad day for smokers in Hull, Mass., as the town’s Board of Selectman voted to make it the 33rd municipality in the state where you must be at least 21-years-old to purchase a tobacco product, then banned smoking in the town’s parks, playgrounds and adjacent parking areas. The park smoking ban will be the first to go into effect, with that change happening on Nov. 1, while the minimum age to purchase tobacco products will ring in the new year when it goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2015. The city is currently having signs produced that will be installed at the soon-to-be no smoking areas, which was part of the reason that the ban isn’t going into effect immediately. The topic of e-cigarettes was also brought up on Tuesday, with the Patriot Ledger reporting that the board will discuss implementing a minimum age of 18 to purchase the devices at its Oct. 28 meeting. Hull is located in southeastern Massachusetts, just over eight miles southeast from Boston across Boston Harbor, and is home to approximately 10,000 residents.
