Boulder, Colo. Smoking Ban Expanded Slightly as Larger Ban Looms

Before the Boulder City Council has a chance to vote on a comprehensive overhaul to the city’s current smoking ban, it will be expanded. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, a city manager’s rule will be implemented to expand the smoking ban south east to the corner of 17th and University Ave. A vote from the Boulder City Council is not needed for approval of this expansion, only a 15-day public comment period. Even if a vote was needed, it would unlikely change the outcome. The Boulder City Council is preparing a vote on a much greater smoking ban proposal, one that would ban smoking at city-owned parks, trails, paths, open spaces, within 15 feet of bus stops, leased agriculture lands and house; and potentially a lot more. The current proposal has exemptions that would allow for smoking in alleys, but that might go before the vote takes place earlier this year. In addition, the neighborhood of The Hill, on the western edge of the University of Colorado campus, is exempt from the proposed rule as the City Council does not want to interfere with its redevelopment, but is only temporary.
