Earlier this week, the Abbeville City Council unanimously adopted the Smoke-Free Air Ordinance known, a piece of legislation that will ban smoking in the city’s parks, government buildings and government vehicles, as well as in public buildings, when it goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2015. The ordinance does provide an exemption for both bars and bingo halls. Private homes and vehicles are also not affected by the new law. While the city has not posted the ordinance on its website, VermillionToday.com reports that it is modeled after similar legislation authored by the Louisiana Municipal Association. Abbeville is home to approixmately 12,500 residents, and is located 150 miles west of New Orleans and 60 miles southwest of Baton Rouge.
