A proposed smoking ban that was slated to be discussed at Tuesday night’s Duncan Town Council meeting was instead tabled as councilors and town officials said they did not have enough information to understand the potential impact of the smoking ban. FoxCarolina.com reports that in lieu of the discussion, the council will “scrutinize the proposal” in a workshop that has yet to be scheduled. They will also solicit more input from citizens on the matter after hearing from just five residents at a hearing last week, as well as contacting other cities who have enacted smoking bans to learn how the bans have affected local businesses and residents. While the ordinance has not been posted online for public review, it is said to be patterned after the one in Pendleton, S.C., which prohibits smoking in public places including restaurants as well as in a number of outdoor places, such as parks and eating areas near sidewalks. Duncan is located in the northwestern corner of the state and has a population of 3,236 people as of the 2012 U.S. Census estimates.
