The city of Alamo Heights, Texas will soon be looking at implementing an indoor smoking ban for businesses within its borders, and the city’s mayor would like to start by getting public input on the matter. Mayor Louis Cooper asked that the agenda item be placed on the city council’s agenda for its Monday, Aug. 25 meeting after telling MySanAntonio.com that he’s been contacted by residents wondering why a ban isn’t already in place. Cooper appears to want to find a balance between allowing businesses to operate how they wish while protecting the health of residents while in public places, but noted that the city is “behind the curve” when it comes to a smoking ordinance. Alamo Heights is known as an affluent city with a 2012 population of 7,346 people. It is surrounded by San Antonio, with its city center about five miles north of downtown San Antonio. The city covers an area of just under two square miles.
