The governor of Tokyo indicated that the Japanese capital will consider banning smoking in all “public facilities” ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics. The news comes only days after McDonald’s announced that it would ban smoking at all of its Japanese locations, a move that affected some 300 restaurants out of the company’s more than 3,000 locations in the country. “Japan is the only advanced nation where smoking is permitted at restaurants. We’d like to pass an ordinance (for a smoking ban) with the cooperation of the metropolitan assembly,” said Governor Yōichi Masuzoe on a television program according to a report from The Japan Times. Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan area in the world with a population of nearly 37 million in the greater Tokyo area.
