At its July 28 meeting, the Sumner, Wash. City Council quickly put to rest an ordinance that would have banned the use of tobacco products in city parks, with several council members saying it was an over-regulation of people’s freedom of choice. According to the Bonney Lake Courier-Herald, the ordinance was discussed but failed to receive a motion to consider after the city’s Parks and Forestry Commission unanimously recommended it be brought to the council. The ordinance sought to add another line of text to the Sumner municipal code, banning the smoking of tobacco and e-cigarettes from the park area, restrooms, spectator and concession areas. Sumner is located in Pierce County, approximately 33 miles south of Seattle, and is home to just under 10,000 residents.
