The Frisco, Texas City Council is scheduled to discuss a proposed park smoking ban at its meeting tonight, and the resulting ordinance could result in either a prohibition on smoking in parks, or an outright ban on the possession of tobacco products in parks. According to the proposal, in March 2014, City Council directed staff to prepare an amendment to clarify that smoking is prohibited in parks. As a result of their work, city staff have returned with the two options for the city council to consider. The directive to develop a park smoking ban came out of a February vote that banned the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors, as well as prohibited their usage wherever smoking is currently banned. If enacted, violators of the ban could face fines of $100 for the first offense and $200 for each subsequent offense. A summary of the proposal can be found here, while the full text with both options is available here. Frisco is home to 141,550 residents and is located about 27 miles north of Dallas.
