Yet another city in Massachusetts could raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products by the end of the year, as the Belmont Board of Health is currently looking into that change and several others, with a likely vote happening at its September 17 meeting. The Boston suburb, which is home to approximately 25,000 residents, is also reported to be looking at creating a new licensing and approval process for tobacco retailers, banning tobacco sales within 500 feet of schools, banning flavored tobacco products and blunt wraps, and placing new requirements on the minimum price and packaging size of small cigars commonly found at convenience stores. Belmont Health Department Director Stefan Russakow told the Belmont Citizen-Herald that he thought the age change, the approval process and ban of sales within 500 feet of a school will be the most likely to pass when the board meets in September.
