The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department appears to be ready to make the state’s beaches completely smoke-free in an attempt to reduce litter and reduce the harm to marine life. The ban would be an extension of the state’s current ban on smoking at most state parks. Included in the proposal is a fine of up to $110 fine for violators, though the hope is that warnings will suffice in most situations. The department is currently taking public comment on the proposal to make 362 miles of coastline smoke-free. The comment period runs through August 29. There are also public meetings on the matter scheduled in Seaside, Newport, Coos Bay and Salem.
