New Orleans Councilwoman Latoya Cantrell is about to kick off on a city-wide campaign that she hopes will drum up support to make all bars in the city smoke-free. Cantrell told WWNO.org that “this has been going on across the country for over a decade now, and so we have real facts that it is not a negative impact on our businesses.” She added that smoking bans increase revenues while making bars and lounges cheaper to maintain. Cantrell will begin the campaign at bars that are currently voluntarily smoke-free, adding that the city council could make the change without the need for a citywide election.
